When the bull rider stirs up the fiery indignation of the bull, the bullfighter either creates a distraction or throws himself on the fire so the bull rider can escape to ride again. Without a good bullfighter, the cowboy becomes a custom fit boot worn by the bull at the end of the day.

The extreme focus and agility of the bullfighter is what keeps the crowd in awe and the bull rider alive.  The bullfighters put their lives on the line every ride to distract the bull or take the hit.  A bull riding arena without a bullfighter is just a penned-up cemetery without grass.
